I’m constantly confronted by thoughts of my mortality. There is a sense of urgency that I feel needs to be confronted through the creation of paintings, collages, drawings. The art that I create acts as a way to exorcize the morbid thoughts from myself. My work utilizes imagery and motifs of bondage and religion which contribute the themes of restraint and submission. The thought of having to submit to something beyond yourself acts as an allegory to represent the emotions that come with the thoughts I’m faced with. The act of making and using these images as material works through those emotions and ground them in my reality. My work is also about sharing sympathy with the viewer and embracing them so they feel connected, even in the blinding fear of our shared thoughts.
My work utilizes collage, text, pastel colors, and hearts all as ways for the viewer to enter my work. The content of the work is heavy and these elements act as modes to counteract that and make the work feel approachable. I also often work in multiples and with repetition as this allows the viewer to build a larger narrative from the narratives that are present in the individual pieces. Formally, the decisions I make are fueled by the content and the desire to have a connection with the viewer.
